The signal frequency is typically in the 40-600 Hz range. (40-600 cycles per second) Ideally the signal would look like a square wave signal the varies in frequency, like the one below. For example, if you have a Small Block Chevy V8, you would want to wire the tach lead to a distributor plug wire, then set the tachometer setting to 2.0.

Then there should be a 12 volt wire from the key to the outside are of that plug are on the cap. Next to the 12 volt wire is where the tach wire should go. H.
